Jenner is small, population 252, but because the view is so expansive, I always feel like I’m in a larger town than I actually am. Here the wide mouth of the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean below the high Sonoma County cliffs. The road winds you over and around the river with it’s grassy banks on the opposite side and then channels you through town where you cannot help but stop the car and get out to take it all in. Up the road on Highway 1 you get a fantastic view of the beach, which becomes a ridge between the river and the sea.
I was staying with friends in a river front house, the last one before all that river becomes the ocean. I think it was the nicest room I have ever stayed in and it was free! It pays to know people who know people! But even if you don’t have any connections in town, there are a couple of inns and plenty of vacation rental homes where you can get the same great view! Just hop online and see which Jenner accommodations best fit your budget.
One of the main attractions of town is the beach. Surrounded by the ocean on one side and the river on the other, you have to get there from the south side – not from town. Here you can beach comb, fly kites, watch for wildlife, and take a nice long walk. Often there are sea lions on the beach. The water is chilly and there’s usually cloud cover. When the fog clears it can be windy so make sure to bring layers, even if it seems ok from town. You don’t want to have to go back for a jacket.
Many people go to Jenner to get out on the river in kayaks or canoes. There are a couple of places to rent from right off the road. The river is wide and calm with no rapids, so beginners will have an easy time. It is deep, though, so be sure and review boating safety and wear a life jacket just in case. Sea lions and otters have been known to swim right along side the boats and you will no doubt see a multitude of birds. The further you go up-stream the warmer it might get, so again, dress in layers and bring sunscreen. Even though summer is behind us you can still get outside and cruise the Russian River!
For lunch, stop by the delightful Café Aquatica. You can get great fair trade organic coffee, a bagel with lox, a fresh deli sandwich and chips, or just a sweet pastry pick-me-up. Everything tastes great when sitting on this patio overlooking the river with it’s peaceful deck and landscaping. Que Tranqilo!
A couple of miles south is Goat Rock Beach. The bluff trails here are dramatic and high above the crashing surf. Out in the water are several rock islands in cool formations. You can follow the road down to the beach or just hike the bluffs for an afternoon of invigorating outdoor adventure. The views will take your breath away!
North of town are the cliffs of despair. They are so high that I white knuckle drive past the staggering drop offs at a snail’s pace. If you get vertigo, take deep breaths and take it slow. I assure you that you will make it through alive. It is easier driving north than south on that part of Hwy 1 because you are on the hill-side of the road. Just beware and mentally prepare. You will see some beautiful views of the pacific and on the other side is Fort Ross and Salt Point State Park, which are definitely worth it!
Jenner can be a day trip or an over night. The main attractions are all outdoors. Don’t count on a lot of night life. Although the inns and few restaurants do offer nosh and vino after dark, you’ll want to wake up and get the most out of your day on this stunning piece of coastline. Whether you like to hike, beachcomb, or paddle on the water, the retreat of Jenner will leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed.
